Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 bottles (750 ml each) dry red wine (e.g., Tempranillo, Merlot, or Garnacha)
  • 4 to 5 blood oranges
  • 1 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1/2 cup brandy or orange liqueur (e.g., Cointreau)
  • 1/4 cup honey or simple syrup
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 apple, thinly sliced (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 cup sparkling water or ginger ale
  • Ice (for serving)
  • Extra blood orange slices and fresh rosemary sprigs (for garnish)
  • Optional: dry ice for spooky effect

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice 3 of the blood oranges into rounds, then cut into half-moons. Place in a small bowl with apple slices, pomegranate seeds, and cinnamon stick. Drizzle with honey and a splash of brandy. Toss gently and let sit for 30 minutes at room temperature to macerate.
  2. In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine both bottles of red wine and the remaining brandy. Stir gently.
  3. After 30 minutes, add the macerated fruit mixture (including all liquid) to the pitcher. Stir gently. Taste and add more honey if needed.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  5. About 15 minutes before serving, remove from fridge. Add sparkling water or ginger ale and stir gently. Garnish with remaining blood orange slices and rosemary sprigs. If using dry ice, add carefully with tongs.
  6. Serve over ice in individual glasses, ensuring each glass gets fruit and liquid.

Notes

Macerating the fruit for 30 minutes is crucial for flavor. For best results, let sangria rest overnight. Add sparkling water just before serving to keep fizz. If using dry ice, handle with tongs and never let guests touch it directly. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine with pomegranate juice and sparkling grape juice, and skip the brandy.
