A fast and flavorful beef and broccoli stir-fry ready in just 15 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights. Tender beef and crisp broccoli are combined in a savory sauce with garlic and ginger for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 4 cups (about 300g) fresh broccoli florets
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (low sodium recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (optional but recommended)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (canola or sunflower)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) water or beef broth
  • Optional: sesame seeds for garnish
  • Optional: sliced green onions for freshness

Instructions

  1. Slice the beef into thin strips against the grain and set aside in a bowl.
  2. Marinate the beef with 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon cornstarch, and a pinch of black pepper. Let sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Wash and cut broccoli into bite-sized florets, about 4 cups.
  4. Mix the sauce by combining 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons oyster sauce, 1 teaspoon brown sugar, 1 teaspoon grated ginger, 3 minced garlic cloves, and 1/4 cup water or beef broth until sugar dissolves.
  5. Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  6. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and sear undisturbed for 1 minute, then stir-fry for 2 more minutes until mostly cooked. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
  7. Remove beef to a plate and set aside.
  8. Add more oil if needed, then stir-fry broccoli for 2-3 minutes until edges brown but broccoli remains crisp. For softer broccoli, add a splash of water and cover for 1 minute to steam.
  9. Return beef to the pan, pour sauce over, and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes until sauce thickens and coats beef and broccoli.
  10. Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired. Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the pan to ensure proper searing. Marinate beef for at least 10 minutes for tenderness. If sauce is too thin, thicken with a cornstarch slurry (1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water). Fresh broccoli is preferred for best texture; if using frozen, thaw and drain well.
