A lighter, homemade version of the popular Starbucks iced brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso. This quick and easy recipe uses simple ingredients to create a creamy, balanced coffee drink with less sugar and no artificial flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots (about 2 ounces) espresso or 1/4 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar (or brown sugar substitute)
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened oat milk
  • Handful of ice cubes (about 4-5 large)
  • Pinch of cinnamon, plus more for garnish
  • Tiny pinch of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brew 2 shots of espresso (or 1/4 cup strong coffee) and let cool for 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar, a pinch of cinnamon, and a tiny pinch of salt to a mason jar or cocktail shaker.
  3. Pour the hot espresso over the brown sugar mixture and stir once or twice to help dissolve the sugar.
  4. Add a handful of ice cubes (about 4-5 large) to the jar.
  5. Screw the lid on tightly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the mixture is frothy and lighter in color.
  6. Fill a tall glass with fresh ice.
  7. Pour the shaken espresso over the fresh ice.
  8. Slowly pour 3/4 cup unsweetened oat milk over the back of a spoon to preserve layers.
  9. Stir gently to combine, then garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Serve immediately.

Notes

For extra foam, shake for a full 30 seconds. Use cold oat milk to prevent curdling. Adjust sweetness by starting with 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar if desired. The brown sugar may settle, so stir before each sip. Make the espresso base ahead and store in the fridge for up to 2 days; shake right before serving.
