A refreshing and easy homemade lemonade combining fresh strawberries, basil, and lemon juice, perfect for summer days and served charmingly in vintage jars.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (150g) fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1012 fresh basil leaves, torn gently
  • 1 cup (240ml) fresh lemon juice (from 45 medium lemons)
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 4 cups (960ml) cold water
  • Ice cubes, for serving
  • Optional: splash of sparkling water for fizz
  • Optional: pinch of sea salt to balance flavors

Instructions

  1. Place the sliced strawberries and torn basil leaves into a large pitcher or mixing bowl. Gently muddle with a muddler or wooden spoon for 1-2 minutes to release juices and aromas without pulverizing.
  2. Add the granulated sugar and freshly squeezed lemon juice to the pitcher. Stir well until the sugar is mostly dissolved, about 2 minutes.
  3. Pour in 4 cups (960ml) of cold water and stir gently to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness by adding more sugar or lemon juice if desired.
  4. Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  5. To serve, fill vintage jars halfway with ice cubes. Pour the chilled lemonade over the ice, including some muddled fruit and basil leaves. Garnish with a fresh basil sprig or lemon wheel if desired. Enjoy immediately.
  6. Optional: Add a splash of sparkling water to each glass before serving for a fizzy twist.

Notes

Do not over-muddle the basil to avoid bitterness. Use the freshest strawberries and basil for best flavor. Adjust sweetness and tartness to taste. Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving. For a sparkling version, add sparkling water just before serving. Store leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
