A fun and quick Halloween guacamole recipe featuring tortilla chips cut into bat shapes and stuck into creamy guacamole for a spooky presentation. Ready in under 15 minutes with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 medium lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion (or white onion)
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 small Roma tomato, diced (optional)
  • 1 large bag of sturdy tortilla chips (e.g., Restaurant Style or Scoops)
  • Optional: smoked paprika or chili powder for dusting

Instructions

  1. Make the chip bats first. Arrange tortilla chips on a cutting board. Using a sharp paring knife, carefully cut each chip into a bat shape by cutting a small notch at the top center for the head and angling the knife to create two pointed wings on either side. Aim for 8-10 bats. Set aside.
  2. Cut each avocado in half lengthwise around the pit. Twist to separate. Remove the pit by gently tapping it with your knife blade and twisting. Scoop the flesh into a mixing bowl.
  3. Using a fork or potato masher, mash the avocados to your desired consistency (some chunks remaining is ideal).
  4. Add lime juice, diced red onion, minced jalapeño, chopped cilantro, salt, and pepper. If using tomato, add it now. Stir until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  5. Transfer the guacamole to a serving bowl or platter. Smooth the top with the back of a spoon.
  6. Gently press the chip bats into the guacamole at various angles so they look like they are emerging from the dip. Some should stick straight up, others tilted.
  7. Optional: Lightly sprinkle the bats with smoked paprika or chili powder for a dark, dusty look.
  8. Serve immediately with extra chips for dipping.

Notes

Make the chip bats first to keep hands clean. Use a shallow bowl so the bats stand tall. Guacamole is best served immediately; if prepping ahead, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning. For a thicker guac, add another half avocado if the mixture is too runny.
