Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups white chocolate chips (preferably Ghirardelli or Guittard)
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (pure)
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract (adjust to taste)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream (for serving, optional)
  • Crushed candy canes (4-5 candy canes, for serving, optional)
  • White chocolate shavings (for garnish, optional)
  • Peppermint sticks (for stirring, optional)
  • Mini marshmallows (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep your crockpot: Rinse and dry the insert. Optionally spray with nonstick cooking spray for easier cleanup.
  2. Add the liquid base: Pour 6 cups whole milk and 2 cups heavy cream into the crockpot. Stir to combine.
  3. Add the sweeteners: Pour in the entire can of sweetened condensed milk, scraping out every bit. Add 2 cups white chocolate chips, sprinkling evenly.
  4. Add the flavorings: Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon peppermint extract, and a pinch of salt.
  5. Stir everything together: Use a wooden spoon or silicone spatula to distribute ingredients evenly.
  6. Set the temperature: Cover and set to LOW. Cook for 2 to 3 hours, stirring every 30-45 minutes.
  7. Check and stir: After 90 minutes, stir well. White chocolate should be mostly melted. Continue until smooth.
  8. Adjust the flavor: Taste and add more peppermint extract (1/4 teaspoon at a time) or salt if needed.
  9. Keep warm for serving: Switch to WARM setting. Can stay warm for up to 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
  10. Prepare toppings: Crush candy canes in a Ziploc bag with a rolling pin. Set aside with whipped cream and other toppings.
  11. Serve and enjoy: Ladle into mugs. Top with whipped cream, crushed candy canes, white chocolate shavings, and a peppermint stick if desired.

Notes

Use fresh, high-quality white chocolate chips for best melting. Stir every 30-45 minutes to prevent scorching. For a stronger peppermint flavor, add extract gradually. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 5 days and reheated gently. The hot chocolate can be made ahead and reheated; flavors meld overnight.
