A rich and creamy homemade toasted white chocolate mocha that beats any coffee shop version. Made with a simple four-ingredient toasted white chocolate sauce, this cozy drink comes together in under 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips (good quality, such as Ghirardelli or Guittard)
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso (dark roast recommended)
  • 1 cup milk of choice (whole milk or oat milk recommended)
  • Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
  • Toasted white chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Toast the white chocolate chips: Place white chocolate chips in a dry small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly with a silicone spatula for 3 to 4 minutes until melted and light golden brown.
  2. Add the butter: Once chocolate is melted and toasted, add 2 tablespoons of butter. Stir until completely melted and combined.
  3. Add the sweetened condensed milk: Pour in 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk and whisk continuously over low heat for about 2 minutes until smooth and silky.
  4. Finish the sauce: Remove from heat. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of sea salt. Whisk until smooth. Set aside.
  5. Brew your coffee: Make 1 cup of strong coffee or espresso using your preferred method.
  6. Warm your milk: Heat 1 cup of milk in a small pot over medium heat or microwave for about 45 seconds. Froth if desired. Do not let it boil.
  7. Assemble the drink: Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of toasted white chocolate sauce to the bottom of a mug. Pour in hot coffee and stir until dissolved. Pour warm milk over the back of a spoon to create layers. Top with foam if available.
  8. Garnish and serve: Add whipped cream and toasted white chocolate shavings if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t rush the toasting step; use medium-low heat and stir constantly. White chocolate burns easily. Make a double batch of sauce and store in the fridge for up to two weeks. For dairy-free, use dairy-free white chocolate chips, coconut condensed milk, and oat milk. The sauce can be frozen in ice cube trays for quick use.
